Chrissie Stewart is a London based artist. She attended Goldsmiths School of Art in the early 80s, where she was part of a research group led by Mary Kelly into gender inequality/feminist art practice.
She obtained her B.A.Hons Fine Art in 1984.
During the subsequent decades she continued her to explore gender through her art practice. Subsequently her work featured in several London Galleries, many Deptford X festivals plus she has several pieces in private collections. Her art practice has spanned painting, drawing, installation, ready mades 3D pieces and installations using found objects.
In 2016 she completed an MA Fine Art at U.A.L’s Chelsea College where she extended her practice to include experimental moving images pieces.
My current practice continues to explore/interrogate the performative aspects of the construct ‘feminine’. I have always experienced it as somewhat an ‘entity’, something outside myself that exists to taunt, confuse, restrict and enthral.
By using a retrospective, somewhat whimsical, personal glance at significant moments of my initial engagement with the ‘feminine’ enables me to interrogate the construct. A moment in time that may or may not have existed but sustains itself in my memory and urges me to manifest juxtapositions and obsessions with it. It’s seductive and beguiling pull towards forcing a way of being.
I am currently interested in what could be seen as the antithesis of grooming and poised behaviour…… mini revolutions perhaps.
